Common ReadMarist’s Freshman Common Read has often focused on race in the United States. With four of the last seven common reads focusing on racism, the College has sought to educate students about race issues in the United States. Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary at Marist, has been instrumental in ensuring that students in economically and educationally disadvantaged areas receive a high-quality education from well-respected institutions. Marist, along with 24 other institutions, has been a leading school in HEOP since its inception in 1969. Since the start of the program, Marist is proud to have graduated nearly 500 students, including 2016, 2017, and 2019 graduates who have been awarded the highly prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, as well as a Gates Millennium Scholar award. Continue and Expand Commitment to the Local CommunityMarist is committed to continuing and expanding our support for inner-city populations in our region, paying particular attention to Poughkeepsie. Because of our location, Marist feels a special obligation to engage with the Poughkeepsie community and support initiatives that serve its residents and promote the city’s development. The College has been a longtime supporter of the Catharine Street Community Center, Family Services, and many other community organizations. Most recently, the College has become part of the Poughkeepsie Children’s Cabinet, which is a City of Poughkeepsie initiative to bring together school districts, government agencies, child-serving community organizations, and other local stakeholders to improve collaboration and coordination of youth supports and services. We are also very proud of the excellent work done in the community by our Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership, Center for Social Justice Research, and Department of Spiritual Life and Service. These community efforts are in addition to Marist’s continued commitment to the Liberty Partnerships Program, and the Newburgh Early College High School Program, both of which focus on the educational needs of inner-city youth. While Poughkeepsie is our primary focus, we are proud to be part of efforts to help students in Kingston and Newburgh as well. Marist wants to be a good neighbor and going forward, we will review our contracting and purchasing practices to ensure that local businesses owned by minorities, women, and veterans are well represented. In addition, we will encourage more faculty and staff to live in the City of Poughkeepsie and explore ways to incentivize their residency there.

Philosophy
The Marist ExperienceWhat makes Marist so special? We believe it starts with our mission and values. The College was founded by the Marist Brothers, who first arrived in Poughkeepsie in 1905. The Marist Brothers were and are famous for their skill and dedication as educators and, even though Marist has not been religiously affiliated for many years, their values remain central to who we are. Those core values are excellence in education, a sense of community, and a commitment to service. From U.S. News & World Report to Barron’s to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, the College is recognized for both educational excellence and exceptional value. Most gratifying has been our inclusion in The Princeton Review’s book Colleges That Create Futures: 50 Schools That Launch Careers By Going Beyond the Classroom, which lists Marist alongside such schools as Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Duke, the University of Pennsylvania, and Notre Dame. At Marist, we demonstrate excellence in education through an emphasis on quality teaching in a small classroom setting. Our dedicated faculty really get to know their students, leading to mentorship, joint research opportunities, and intellectual guidance. We believe in the value of a liberal arts education and the idea that all students–no matter what their primary field of study–should receive a broad education across many disciplines, learn to think logically and creatively, and be able to communicate effectively. Excellence in education also includes a forward-looking educational philosophy that incorporates the use of technology and meaningful learning opportunities outside the classroom–everything from internships to study abroad to leadership development programs. At Marist, we believe that the best type of education prepares students for success after college. Visitors to campus are always struck by the strong sense of community here, which manifests itself in ways large and small: The way people interact with and support each other; The way the community rallies around someone in need. It’s a place where students are both actively involved and supported, and their engagement in student life makes us a better, more vibrant institution. There are scores of student clubs; an active student government; exciting Division I athletics, intramurals, and club sports; and first-rate opportunities in music and the arts. Mindful of their role in the global community, 50 percent of our undergraduates study abroad. Indeed, we are constantly impressed by our students’ enthusiasm for all they do. That sense of community is also enhanced by our spectacular campus on the shores of the Hudson River (as well as our campus in the historic center of Florence, Italy). With beautiful buildings and unmatched river views, Marist is without doubt a fantastic place to live and learn. At Marist, we recognize that those of us who have been blessed by good fortune have an obligation to give back, and that’s why our commitment to social justice and serving others runs so deep. As an institution, Marist supports a wide variety of programs to meet the community’s needs and broaden access to education. We also encourage our students to get involved in community service – not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s also good preparation for life. Marist students volunteer in our local community and around the world – everything from mentoring young people right here in Poughkeepsie to building houses in Arkansas to teaching computer skills to children in Mexico. They raise money to help wounded warriors, fight HIV/AIDS, and defeat breast cancer and they do it all with a sense of optimism that they can have a lasting impact. We believe that service to others builds character. The Marist Brothers call it “doing good quietly,” and it is what all of us are called upon to do.
Vision
Marist 100Marist 100 is a plan developed at an exciting time in the College’s history. We approach our centennial in 2029 from a position of incredible strength, reflecting upon and celebrating Marist’s remarkable growth and development over its first 100 years; reaffirming our commitment to the ongoing relevance and distinctiveness of our mission, values, and model of higher education; and thinking boldly about the years that lie ahead. Our Strategic Plan will help make a Marist education accessible to a broader range of talented students and will help us carry out our ambitious vision of improving the world through education. Strategic Plan Pillars:Academic Vibrancy Marist will emerge as a leader in its student-centered approach to teaching and learning. Our students will benefit from the best of the liberal arts and pre-professional training through an education that is relevant, innovative, experiential, interdisciplinary, globally connected, and larger than the sum of its parts. Marist will empower its students, faculty, and staff to change the world through the generation of knowledge and societal impact. Core Strategies 1. Enrich student learning and faculty engagement by making Marist College a higher-education leader in experiential learning and student-focused educational practices. 2. Foster and sustain a vibrant intellectual community of teacher-scholars and practitioners eager to experiment inside and outside of the classroom, who are deeply committed to the academic and professional success of our students, and who produce ground-breaking scholarly, professional, and creative work. 3. Create pathways for student success by adapting how and what we teach, and through the development of programs that match student interest, societal need, and market demand. 4. Ensure that Marist undergraduates make interdisciplinary connections, solve complex problems, collaborate, and develop leadership capabilities by investing in the relevance and distinctiveness of the Marist Core. 5. Enrich the educational experience through a curriculum and classroom experience that reflects and embraces the diversity of our society and our world. Empower students to explore, learn, find and pursue their passions, develop their voices, and lead through the creation of a dynamic campus culture offering a rich array of co-curricular and recreational activities. 2. Expansive Community We will bring Marist to the world and the world to Marist, building a broader community and richer learning environment for all. Marist will foster a deep sense of connection and belonging among its internal, local, and global communities, one which will span generations of students and foster lifelong connection and engagement. Marist’s reputation as a welcoming and inclusive community will allow the College to introduce itself to new audiences, attracting talent from an increasingly diverse range of geographies and backgrounds. Ensure that our growing alumni population feels a deep and lifelong sense of belonging through the creation of new and the strengthening of existing opportunities for academic, professional, and personal connections with Marist. Our People People are at the heart of Marist’s distinctive and relationship-rich educational experience, and we recognize that an investment in our faculty and staff is an investment in our future. To accomplish the ambitious vision set out in this plan, Marist will provide a vibrant, supportive, and inclusive work environment that fosters the growth, development, and well-being of all faculty and staff. Our Finances We enter Marist 100 in an enviable financial position for a college of our size: substantial and liquid resources, manageable debt and additional capacity for borrowing, strong bond ratings, and a long history of positive operating results. As such, we will take a holistic approach towards resourcing Marist 100: inspire a greater degree of philanthropic support from our alumni, parents, friends, and grant-funding agencies; reallocate existing resources to emergent priorities; and derive additional revenues by launching new programs and ancillary businesses. Our Natural Environment As an institution of higher education, Marist College has a moral obligation to responsibly steward its natural environment; to adopt sustainable practices wherever possible across its operations; and to meaningfully integrate a sustainability mindset across its curriculum, co-curriculum, and research and recreational activities. We are proud of the actions the College has taken to promote environmental sustainability to date but recognize that the scope of the challenge facing our world requires us to do much more, and to do so in a manner that is more intentional and better coordinated than past efforts. Our Built Environment Marist is fortunate to have one of the most beautiful and functional learning environments of any college or university, with superior academic and residential facilities and a world-class technological platform that allow members of our community to learn, connect, engage, and thrive. Throughout the period covered by Marist 100, we will continue to invest in Marist’s physical plant and technological infrastructure, ensuring that they support our broader vision and goals.
