Classification Title : Chief Of Staff Department : Office of the Chancellor Full-Time/Part-Time : Full-Time Months per Year : 12 Months Position Summary: The Chief of Staff reports directly to the Chancellor of UNC Asheville and serves as support staff to the Chancellor's Senior Staff. The Chief of Staff directs the work of the Office of the Chancellor and coordinates and supports the meetings of the Board of Trustees, serves as the liaison between the University of North Carolina System Office and the Chancellor, serves as the point of contact for the various constituent groups served by the university, and provides coordination and leadership on administrative University matters. In collaboration with other members of the Chancellor's Senior Staff, the Chief of Staff is responsible for planning, organizing, and guiding the initiatives and activities of the Chancellor as they relate to the internal operations and the external relationships of the University including strategic and financial matters. The Chief of Staff is responsible for researching and providing appropriate and timely information to the Chancellor to facilitate efficient and effective decision-making, overseeing the implementation of inter-divisional initiatives, ensuring that issues have been vetted and that information has been adequately developed for the Chancellor to make decisions, and working closely with the Chancellor to establish priorities for the Chancellor's time and attention. The Chief of Staff works in close collaboration with the Chancellor's Executive Assistant on scheduling events, briefing Trustees, faculty and staff matters and coordinates Senior Staff meeting agendas. Minimum Education/Experience/Skill : Master's degree. May also consider a Bachelor's degree and equivalent 5-7 years of experience. Three to five years of senior executive leadership experience. Knowledge of higher education and experience in College or University. Highly effective written and verbal communication required, held a leadership role of increasing responsibility and prior supervisory experience. Preferred Education/Experience/Skill : Five to seven years of progressive experience in executive-level roles within a large organization, preferably within an institution of higher education. Experience in building trust-based relationships with senior leaders, faculty, staff, governing board members, elected officials, and community representatives. Experience in working directly or indirectly with a governing board of an institution of higher education or non-profit organization. An understanding of the distinction between governance and executive-level briefings and scheduling and priorities. Experience in managing or working with administrative support staff. Background in the following is highly desirable: organizational planning and development, project management, policy development, and calendar and multiple constituency scheduling.
